Program Outline

DFL is participating with Central Ohio Youth Rugby League aka Columbus Olympic Rugby League to ensure competition with other local communities:

  • Hilliard
  • Pickerington
  • Columbus (Polaris)
  • Watkins

Currently, we will be the only youth rugby program in central Ohio who offers full contact for kids in first grade through 6th grade. COYRL is referring the families of kids in other communities to DFL to register for tackle rugby.

Format

Kids will be playing "7's rugby": The same game played in the Olympics.

Match Play
  • 7 players vs. 7 players
  • 7 minute halves with 5 minute halftime
  • Players will play minimum of 2 games per week
  • 30 minutes between games
Field
  • K-4 (Junior League) - field size approximately 30 yards log, 25 yards wide
  • 7 minute halves with 5 minute halftime
  • 5th/6th grade (Senior League) - field size approximately 50 yards wide, 60 yards long.
  • 7th/8th grade ( Middle School League ) - field size approximately 50 yards wide, 60 yards long.
  • No goal posts needed on any field.
Organization/team creation

Designed to be flexible, as we don't know how many kids will register

Field Location

All practices and games will take place at the Dublin Coffman Park extension.

  • Parking lot directly off post road (newly constructed)
  • This is the field located next to the new parking lot and can be accessed from Commerce Pkwy or old Post Rd (that leads into the rec center). If travelling from out of Dublin, map the Dublin Community Recreation Center and arrive at practice/game time.

Practice Date/Time

All practices and games will take place at the Dublin Coffman Park extension.

  • First Practice will take place Friday March 16th
  • Rookie Rugby - Welcome to join mini practices on Friday nights 5:30- 6:30, but not required
  • Mini, JR, SR, MS: Friday nights 5:30 - 7:00pm

**Coaches may select additional practice dates (especially middle school rugby)

Practices will be held in "academy pool style" format for the first several weeks Based on registration numbers, individual teams may be formed

Game Date/Time

  • First game will be Saturday April 7th.
  • Youth League games will be on Saturday afternoons between 12pm and 4 pm
  • Middle school: Rugby games will be at 11am Saturdays
    • Schedule is not yet set up, but games rotate each week between Dublin, Polaris, Hilliard, Pickerington, and Watkins
  • Games will be Saturdays and staggered slightly based on age group and field space/availability
  • Each player will play minimum of 2 games each Saturday

We are expecting to work around DYA's spring sports times per age to make it as easy as possible for families who have kids playing rugby.
